Introduction to Knot Theory and Psychoanalysis
-seminar-

with Robert Groome
The 2010 Fall course aims to introduce a theory of knots for psychoanalysts without vulgarizing. Each course will be presented with
the construction of a specific topological problem in connection with the field of psychoanalysis. Above all we will not be illustrating
psychoanalytic concepts with mathematical concepts, but introducing a truly analytic construction of topology. No previous
mathematical or technical competence is required to participate, just a certain amount of perseverance, colored pens, and paper.
At the end of the course, each student will have the material to proceed further in the practice and theory.

Outline

1. What is topology? Set theoretic, combinatorial, and categorical responses. How does this engage the practice and theory of
psychoanalysis?
2. Graphs, Surfaces, and Knots.
3. Introduction to the theory of Links, Locks, and Knots: Problems, Theorems, and Conjectures.
4. The Object of Knot Theory: Duality, Symmetry, and Projection
5. Methods of Knot Theory: Codes, Graphs, Groups, and Polynomials
6. Reformulation of the Classical Theory of Knots: Lock Theory
7. Generalized Lock Theory
8. Modern Analytic Constructions: Lacan, Soury, and Vappereau
9. Open questions and final presentations
